This is a gorgeous & very rare (possibly) French Art Deco 1930's gold and black enamel powder and mirror compact and cigarette case. The front area has a wonderfully detailed hand-engraved gold acanthus leaf scrolled decoration, highlighted with black enamel.
Some notable wear to the enamel edges where it’s been handled over the years.
There are two compartments: one contains the original powder screen and silk or satin puff; as well as a bevelled makeup mirror. It opens by pressing a button on the underside. The other compartment was presumably used for cigarettes or cash; this opens with a grooved button that you gently slide downwards at the front.
The hinges and closures all work as they should. The bevelled mirror is clean and clear with no damage. The powder puff is in really good condition considering its age.
There is only one mark that I could find stamped on the edge of the bevelled mirror, which reads ‘FOREIGN’.
This is a wonderful and very unique piece. It’s a perfect size to slip into a purse or pocket or make a fabulous one-off gift.
