19th Century Swedish GUSTAVSBERG White Ceramic Kitchen Storage Jar Set x13

£1,995.00

Antique 19th century RARE set of stylish & functional kitchen storage jars made by GUSTAVSBERG of Sweden dating to the mid-1800s.

The set comprises of x13 storage white ware jars, each with their original lid.

Each are labelled with a hand-painted black Gothic decorative script written in Swedish with one exception 'Saffron', which has an old paper label. The translation into English is listed below.

The storage jars have an attractive barrel design with four turned rings top and bottom. It’s less pronounced on some of the smaller jars due to handling over the years. They are each marked on the base (except the Saffron storage jar) with the Gustavsberg anchor and rope. They date to 1839-1860.

I believe that they may have been made bespoke and commissioned for a grand house's kitchen.

The set would look fabulous on display in a contemporary interior on a kitchen dresser or in a cabinet and hopefully used!

GUSTAVSBERG

This is the most famous pottery and porcelain company in Sweden.

The Gustavsberg pottery and porcelain production based in Stockholm has a long and varied history. The nobleman Gustaf Gabrielsson Oxenstierna founded a brick mill in the area as early as the 1640s. Gustavsberg as we know it today was established in 1825.

Art pieces were exhibited at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900. The Gustavsberg company received worldwide recognition for the quality of its work. The factory was broken up during the 1990s however there is still a factory shop on the same location. The Gustavsberg Porcelain Museum is now part of the National Museum.
